Zimbabwe is a fabulous vacation destination for all types of travellers, whether you're seeking unique activities and attractions or the ultimate safari experience. June marks the start of the dry season in Southern Africa, and is an ideal time for safari goers to take a trip.

Hwange National Park

Hwange National Park is the most popular wildlife destination in Zimbabwe. As Zimbabwe's largest national park, Hwange boasts a variety of wildlife that won't disappoint. The dry season is the best time to visit this region, as the waterholes bustle with activity during the winter months. The park supports an impressive population of over 40 000 tusker elephants, as well as large zebra herds, African wild dog, leopards and healthy prides of lions. Various antelope species can also be spotted here, including roan and sable antelope.

The concentration of wildlife makes for unforgettable game drive experiences, however walking safaris are also very popular here. Other unique activities include cultural visits to local villages, star-bed sleeps outs and watching wildlife from just meters away in the various hides around the park.

A unique attraction not to miss is the elephants drinking from the pool at Somalisa Camp.

Mana Pools National Park

Mana Pools National Park, situated in the north of the country, borders the Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia. Although part of the park lies on the banks of the Zambezi River, the unique miombo woodland covers a significant area as well, forming an important source of shade for elephants and antelope species during the dry season. Besides the river, there are several natural 'pools' dotted across this UNESCO World Heritage Site, which attract hippos, Nile crocodiles, herds of buffalo and plenty of bird life. Wild dog and lions are common predators in the area.

Thanks to the proximity to the Zambezi river, canoeing is the most sought out wildlife viewing activity in Mana Pools. Walking safaris in the woodlands offer exceptional and rare sightings, alongside the thrilling game drives on offer. Fishing on the Zambezi is another popular activity to look forward to.

A unique sight you might witness is the 'standing elephants' rearing up on their hind legs in search of food high up in the trees.

Matobo National Park

While it may be a lesser known destination in Zimbabwe, Matobo National Park is definitely worth a visit. Known for it's unique and unusual rock formations, the park also is a great wildlife destination, and a rich history dating thousands of years. If rhinos are on your safari bucket list, then you're in luck, as the park serves as a protected area for both black and white rhino. Although this UNESCO World Heritage Site doesn't have many predators, you can still have an excellent game viewing experience. Here guests can even find accommodation which has been built around natural caves.

Activities not to miss are walking safaris and rhino tracking, which allow you to get up close to the rhinos and other herbivores in the area. June makes for the perfect time to do these activities as the bush is less dense, making animals easier to spot.

Unique attractions to pay attention to are the rock paintings, completed by Bushmen that lived in the area thousands of years ago, and the natural 'balancing rocks' - an inexplicable phenomenon to marvel at.

Matusanda National Park

Matusadona National Park, stretched along the shore of Lake Kariba, is another remote region that deserves a visit. The vast grassy areas feed species such as impala, zebra, waterbuck, buffalo and even grazing hippos that venture out of the water. The large numbers of herbivores attract big cats and other predators. In the dry season animals gather near Lake Kariba, a primary water source, and elephants can been seen frolicking in the mud, while fish eagles soar in the skies above.

Popular activities are boat cruises on Lake Kariba, however game drives are also on offer. Visits to islands, such as Starvation Island, for a picnic or a delectable lunch are a lovely way to spend the day.

The unique attraction of the park is Lake Kariba, the fourth largest man-made lake in the world. Most accommodations in the area offer spectacular views of the lake and the surrounding wildlife, and houseboat stays are available as well.

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is a well known destination in Zimbabwe, as the town is situated next right next to the thundering waterfall - one of the largest in the world. By June the rainy season has passed and the Falls are full, however the mist has dissipated enough for clear sightings at this time of year. The Zambezi National Park and the town become one, and most of Africa's attractive wildlife can be seen here. A day trip to Chobe National Park in Botswana also comes highly recommended for safari enthusiasts.

There are a wide range of activities in Victoria Falls that are sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Enjoy dinner on The Bushtracks Express - a beautifully restored steam train, or embark on a unique river cruise right above the Falls. Thrill seekers can enjoy ziplining in the Batoka Gorge and bungee jumping from the bridge, while white water rafting in the rapids below gets the adrenaline pumping without fail. View the Falls from above on a helicopter flight, or interact with rescued elephants on the elephant encounter. The list is endless.
